A substantial element of my work stems from my father's experience as a refugee from the Ukraine following the Second World War. It is in the context of previous works exploring this subject matter that I submit this proposal.

Trafalgar Square's function as a commemorative site of Lord Nelson's celebrated naval victory over the French and Spanish at Trafalgar has led me to propose a work that attempts to link his powerful fleet with a symbol of contemporary warfare.

The work takes the form of two wooden life-size replicas of sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles. The missiles will be 6 metres long with a wingspan of 2.4 metres and are to be built from oak cut at the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Ships that fought at Trafalgar in 1805 were constructed from timber hewed from this forest.

The association implicit in the use of wood for Mannequin's construction allows wider readings to emerge that go beyond the work's physical form. By harnessing Nelson's fighting ship to a contemporary piece of military hardware Mannequin becomes not only a symbol of power, technology and conflict, it also embodies the history of war.

Ultimately, Mannequin is a work that aims to explore the concept of victory and its commemoration in the 21st century.
