This One's for the Pigeons (Oi! Pigeons, over here!)
Card, paint and acrylic
This One's for the Pigeons is an ordinary family saloon car, a Ford Fiesta, which will have been painted with resin and acrylic paint to look as if it's totally covered with pigeon shit.
Over the time of the installation in Trafalgar Square, the local pigeons will help the sculpture to organically develop. Since every attempt is made to clean up after the pigeons in Trafalgar Square, keeping them under control, This One's for the Pigeons would be a nod to the hopelessness of these attempts and a recognition of the abandoned car culture of less salubrious areas of London.
Traditionally, the plinths in Trafalgar Square are places where sculptures are super-formal, celebrating and promoting power and glory, both literally and through their aesthetic. This One's for the Pigeons highlights the everyday reality of the square and of this particular site for sculpture with its casualness and humour.
