White marble
The Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square has been empty for most of its 164 year history but that is changing. It will now be the place to marvel at contemporary works from some of the world’s leading artists.
At 12.30pm on Thursday 15th September in a public ceremony, Marc Quinn's astonishing sculpture, 'Alison Lapper Pregnant', was unveiled. The sculpture is a portrait of Alison Lapper when she was eight months pregnant and is one of two works selected from a shortlist of six other artists.
'I regard it as a modern tribute to femininity, disability and motherhood. It is so rare to see disability in everyday life – let alone naked, pregnant and proud.'

Quinn’s statue is carved from white marble and weighs more than twelve tonnes. It will be displayed on the plinth until 2007 when it will be replaced by Thomas Schtte's 'Hotel for the Birds'.
Since its award-winning refurbishment, Trafalgar Square has regained its place as London’s central piazza where people can meet and relax. Its re-opening has seen visitors increase by more than 200 per cent. These stunning pieces of modern art exhibited on the fourth plinth will further enhance the Square’s appeal.
And provide a bit of company for Nelson.
